Sodium Hyaluronic Acid Does not Cause Cancer
With the rise of hyaluronic acid as an ingredient in many cosmetic creams and injections, there has been some controversy surrounding the ingredient and its role as a cancer-causing agent. This notion is quite distressing as it is blatantly false. Many consumers have been scared away from a fantastic ingredient because of some inexplicable posts made by people who don’t know what they’re talking about. These authors do not make baseless claims, but the claims they do make are only supported by poorly-done studies combined with flawed reasoning. The authors of these articles have refused to remove the misleading information, so a counter-argument must be raised.
Hyaluronic acid is created in the body of all human beings. It has been found to be completely non-toxic and plays a vital role in the smooth functioning of the body. HA is produced throughout all stages of life including during pregnancy and when you’re very young. Of course, the infant cancer rates are almost nonexistent, yet sodium hyaluronic acid is still very much present in their bodies.
To a naïve reader, the reports which do suggest that HA plays a role in cancer are quite scary. These studies show that elevated levels of HA are present at tumor sites. The reports claim that HA is a chemical which helps to promote metastasis or invasion. What most people aren’t aware of is that HA naturally gets created in additional quantities at the site of wounds and other biological anomalies. More HA appears in the vicinity of tumors because the body uses it as a healing agent. For example, when you get a wound, fibroblasts come to the site of injury to make more medical grade hyaluronic acid.
Naked mole rats are animals which do not get cancer. This is clearly a very important fact and can perhaps help us understand their protection mechanism. A study published in the extremely prestigious journal Nature concludes that HA coats the cells within the naked mole rat to defend against cancer. While it’s true that all animals naturally produce HA, the naked mole rat makes a very large version which has a very high molecular weight.
Another study by Finnish researchers shows that HA is involved in and appears at the site of progressing cancerous cells. It goes on to say that a high number of cells with increased HA levels were associated with very advanced forms of cancer. While this might sound terrible to an unfamiliar reader, the study never said that micro HA was the cause of the cancer cells or their progression, just used the words “associated” and “involved”. Claiming that this study proves HA causes tumors is akin to saying that roads are responsible for automobile accidents.
